Toxic polyneuropathy of shoe-industry workers. A study of 122 cases.

Abstract: SYNOPSISThe toxic polyneuropathy observed in a group of shoe-industry workers in Italy was clinically characterised by a symmetrical prevalently distal motor deficit, with occasional marked weakness of pelvic girdle muscles, and frequently by only subjective sensory symptoms; non-specific disturbances usually preceded neurological signs. Widely distributed in many regions of Italy is an occupational toxic polyneuropathy which is commonest among workers in the shoe industry but also affects manufacturers of bag… Show more

“…Other authors have stressed that many solvents primarily cause neuropathy, while objective signs of central nervous involvement have been minor, if any (8,48). Our findings of slight positive signs of slowed nE'rve conduction velocities among the car painters and no increase in EEG abnormalities in comparison to the reference group of railroad engineers is similar.…”

“…Nerve conduction velocities and electromyographic findings have been published by Italian authors (1,8), and American authors (3, 6) have used ENMG methods as screE'ning tests for cases of methyl-nbutyl ketone-induced neuropathy.…”

“…Peripheral neuropathy has recently been studied extensively in typical work environments (1,5,7,14), in "sniffers" (8,17,18,23), and in experimental animals (21,27,29,30). In such studies the causes of neuropathy have been n-hexane (14,27,33), trichloroethylene (7), and methyl butyl ketone (1,21,29,31).…”

“…HEX is a neurotoxic solvent and can cause sensorimotor polyneuropathy, mainly affecting distal sensory and motor nerves, both in industrial settings 1−6) and in glue-sniffing addicts 7−10) . In occupationally exposed workers following a sufficient level of exposure to HEX, subjects gradually experience weakness and/or numbness and paresthesia in their distal extremities 2,4,6) . The severity of the neuropathy and the related clinical signs and symptoms are proportional to the intensity, duration and frequency of exposure 9,11,12) .…”
