Towards Unifying the Planetary Boundary Layer and Shallow Convection in CAM5 with the Eddy-Diffusivity/Mass-Flux Approach

Abstract: The modular structure of the boundary layer and convection parameterizations in atmospheric models have long been affecting the numerical representation of subgrid-scale motions and their mutual interactions. A promising alternative, the eddy-diffusivity/mass-flux approach (EDMF), has the potential for unifying the existing formulations into a consistent scheme and improving some of the long-standing issues. This study documents a step towards developing such a unified approach by implementing a stochastic mul… Show more

Kurowski et al (2019) implemented a stochastic multi-plume EDMF scheme into CAM5, and Sakradzija et al (2016) coupled Sakradzija et al (2015) to EDMF in ICON. Several NWP models have included EDMF approaches, i.e., ECMWF (Köhler, 2005;Köhler et al, 2011), AROME (Pergaud et al, 2009), NCEP GFS (J.…”

“…Using this approach, an attempt will be made to obtain a functional dependence of the eddy transport characteristics on large-scale ocean thermodynamical characteristics using the Kara Sea shelf model in the Arctic as an example. In recent studies a similar approach was used in [16] and [17,18] but the eddy-diffusivity/mass-flux approach (EDMF) was used to parameterize convection and planetary boundary layer in atmospheric models.…”

“…Although the precipitating EDMF version is somewhat complex, especially in comparison with its nonprecipitating version, it is still fairly computational efficient, making it a strong parameterization candidate for any GCM. Several EDMF versions have been successfully implemented and evaluated in both climate GCMs (Kurowski et al, 2019b;Witte et al, 2022) and operational numerical weather prediction models (e.g., Kohler et al, 2011;Suselj et al, 2014Suselj et al, , 2021Han et al, 2016;Olson et al, 2019).…”
