Purpose As universities advance towards a new data-informed, intra-institutional collaboration paradigm, new roles and services are continuously added to academic library routines. This changing context that exerts considerable stress upon library organizations to prove their value and contributions to student progress is leading the community to start questioning the utility, scope and prospects of patron data collection practices. The study sought library science postgraduate students’ viewpoints about the adequacy and utility of current library use data collection practices in Greek academic libraries. It also aimed to investigate the value, relevance and priority of the integration of library usage data with the rest of university information systems (e.g. learning analytics) along with associated practical and ethical considerations, and advocacy aspects. Design/methodology/approach Mixed-methods, Web-based survey distributed to postgraduate students during a seminar designed to familiarize them with trends in academic library use data capabilities. Findings Participants acknowledged that neither policies nor procedures are currently adequate to expand and interconnect their data pools to campus information systems. They were opposed to disclosing personally identifiable patron activity data to faculty, while their opinions were divided as to the use of student activity monitoring technology. Nevertheless, they made several comments on how to mitigate the community's considerations around the implementation of this new data management philosophy in the library and were optimistic about the benefits this development could entail for library visibility and student progress. Originality/value Results of this first-time research in the Greek higher education context, revelatory of potential road blockers to upgrading the library use data collection practices, can be of significant value to both curricula developers and university decision-makers who seek ways to prepare the ground for the successful implementation of new operations.

Οι πρόσφατες τεχνολογικές και παιδαγωγικές εξελίξεις σήμερα προσφέρουν στις βιβλιοθήκες τα μέσα και την ευκαιρία να ενισχύσουν τον ρόλο, τον αντίκτυπο και την προβολή τους και να γίνουν ένας κρίσιμος πανεπιστημιακός δείκτης προσθέτοντας στην αυξανόμενη δυναμική και πολυπλοκότητα ενός χώρου που ήδη απαιτεί αυξημένη εξειδίκευση, συνεργασίες και νέες διαδικασίες αξιολόγησης. Στο πλαίσιο του διεθνούς ανταγωνισμού όπου μια αποδοτική βιβλιοθήκη θεωρείται σημαντικό κεφάλαιο για τα πανεπιστήμια, μετρήσεις της δραστηριότητας της βιβλιοθήκης που θα συμβάλλουν στην πρακτική συνάφεια της πολιτικής και των λειτουργιών της καθίστανται περισσότερο θεμελιώδεις από ποτέ.Υπό αυτές τις συνθήκες, ερευνητές και επαγγελματίες του κλάδου έχουν αρχίσει να εξετάζουν και προτεραιοποιούν σενάρια όπου συμπλέκονται οι βιβλιοθήκες με την μάθηση και εκπαιδευτική επιτυχία και να πραγματοποιούν πιλοτικές μελέτες γύρω από εφικτές ενσωματώσεις δεδομένων βιβλιοθήκης σε συστήματα αναλυτικής της μάθησης. Και ενώ η επιστημονική ταυτότητα του πεδίου της βιβλιοθηκονομίας αποτελεί ακόμη αντικείμενο συζήτησης, ο ισχυρισμός ότι η συμμετοχική ανάπτυξη υπηρεσιών βιβλιοθηκών πρέπει να λάβει προτεραιότητα, ως απαραίτητη για την αντιμετώπιση από τα ιδρύματα τριτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης των μεταβαλλόμενων καιρών και αντιλήψεων, κυριαρχεί σήμερα στην έρευνα.Εντασσόμενη σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, η παρούσα πολυφασική ποιοτική διατριβή σχεδιασμένη με μια αναστοχαστική, συμμετοχική και διεπιστημονική προσέγγιση, στοχεύει να αντιμετωπίσει το θέμα της συλλογής δεδομένων χρήσης βιβλιοθηκονομικών υπηρεσιών σε ελληνικές και ισπανικές δημόσιες πανεπιστημιακές βιβλιοθήκες υπό λειτουργική, πληροφοριακή, συμπεριφορική και οργανωτική προοπτική. Μέσω εφαρμογής μεθόδων εποικοδομητικής έρευνας που μπορούν να εμπνεύσουν τη μοντελοποίηση αποδοτικών, ευέλικτων και καινοτόμων φοιτητοκεντρικών ακαδημαϊκών βιβλιοθηκών (1) ανιχνεύει εκείνους τους παράγοντες που επηρεάζουν την επαναξιολόγηση της συλλογής, επεξεργασίας και εφαρμογής δεδομένων χρήσης, (2) χαρτογραφεί νέες τάσεις που υποστηρίζουν τη μέτρηση του βαθμού ενσωμάτωσης της βιβλιοθήκης στις εκπαιδευτικές διαδικασίες καθώς και αναδυόμενες δομές όπου η σύγκλιση διαφορετικών υπηρεσιών και πόρων συνεισφέρει με μοναδικό τρόπο στην πανεπιστημιακή αποστολή, (3) διερευνά εάν και πώς η κοινότητα εκμεταλλεύεται νέες ευκαιρίες για να αναλάβει ηγετικό ρόλο στην διαχείριση της ιδρυματικής πληροφορίας και (4) ανακαλύπτει πεδίο περαιτέρω έρευνας και ανάπτυξης με στόχο τη βελτίωση θεωρίας, πόρων, επαγγελματικής ανάπτυξης και πρακτικής.Το πειστικότερο επιχείρημα για την έναρξη αυτής της προσπάθειας πηγάζει από την επιθυμία και την αναγκαιότητα ενίσχυσης της πρακτικής συνάφειας και χρηστικότητας των αποτελεσμάτων της έρευνας στην επιστήμη της πληροφόρησης, επιθυμία που επέκτεινε αυτό το έργο πέρα από τις παραδοσιακές ερευνητικές μεθοδολογίες. Προσφέροντας ένα προοδευτικό κράμα συνεργατικής δράσης, συνεντεύξεων και δειγματοληπτικής έρευνας, με τη συμμετοχή ομάδων ενδιαφέροντος σε διάφορα στάδια για την επίτευξη αποτελεσμάτων που συνδυάζουν buy-in, καινοτομία και ανάπτυξη, συμβάλει στην τεκμηρίωση της ανάγκης επανεξέτασης των λειτουργιών της βιβλιοθήκης και στην ενθάρρυνση των επιστημόνων της πληροφόρησης να ξεκινήσουν επιστημονική συζήτηση για μια σειρά νέων ζητημάτων σχετικών με την μεταβαλλόμενη ατζέντα των ακαδημαϊκών βιβλιοθηκών.
