Towards next-generation time-domain diffuse optics for extreme depth penetration and sensitivity

Abstract: Light is a powerful tool to non-invasively probe highly scattering media for clinical applications ranging from oncology to neurology, but also for molecular imaging, and quality assessment of food, wood and pharmaceuticals. Here we show that, for a paradigmatic case of diffuse optical imaging, ideal yet realistic time-domain systems yield more than 2-fold higher depth penetration and many decades higher contrast as compared to ideal continuous-wave systems, by adopting a dense source-detector distribution wit… Show more

“…These results are consistent with what inferred from recent studies showing possible involvement of collagen in breast cancer onset and progression 4 , and will open new screening potential if confirmed on a larger scale. Impressive growth on photonics components are now opening the way to deployment of small, cost-effective, and portable time-resolved diffuse optics devices 10,11 , which could be used in simple and operator independent breast cancer risk screening programs at the level of the general practitioner. …”

“…Figure 1(a) reports the setup used which is the same setup as in [13] except that we changed the laser source by a supercontinuum laser (SuperK EXTREME, NKT photonics, 10 ps pulse width) and added a fast wavelength selection system: an acousto-optical tunable filter (AOTF, NKT Photonics). The switching of the wavelength is fully automatized and controlled by a home-made measurement software.…”

“…As in the setup of [13], the backscattered light coming from the phantom was collected by two optical fibers at a distance of 30 mm from the excitation fiber ("source" in Fig. 1).…”

“…Additionally, they are sensitive to high light exposure. Only recently Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPMs) have been proposed as a possible revolutionary alternative to PMTs [7], [8] thus resulting in an impressive reduction in the whole system complexity and cost and paving the way to the design of novel TD-DO systems, where hundreds of channels can be easily parallelized.…”
