Industrial symbiosis, a subfi eld of industrial ecology, engages traditionally separate industries and entities in a collaborative approach to resource sharing that benefi ts both the environment and the economy. This chapter examines the period 1989-2014 to "take stock" of industrial symbiosis. First, we look at the earliest days to discuss what inspired industrial symbiosis both in the scholarly literature and in practice. Next, we draw attention to certain dilemmas and sharpen the distinctions between industrial symbiosis and some related concepts such as ecoindustrial parks and environmentally balanced industrial complexes. With regard to dissemination of industrial symbiosis ideas, we found that at the country level, China has now received the most attention in industrial symbiosis academic research and this continues to grow rapidly.The fi nal section looks at both theory (conceptual knowledge largely from academia) and practice (on-the-ground experience of public, not-for-profi t, and private organizations working to implement industrial symbiosis) as both are essential to industrial symbiosis. A bibliometric analysis of the scholarly work, capturing 391 articles indexed in Scopus and Web of Science for 20 years between 1995 and 2014, is used to defi ne and track the types of articles, how the mix of articles has changed over time, and what the most popular journals are. Taking a closer look at the research literature, distinct themes are identifi ed and discussed such as the scale of industrial symbiosis, whether industrial symbiosis is based on planning or selforganization, the role of social factors, and what is known about the actual performance of industrial symbiosis. To assess important issues with regard to practice, we compile a list of industrial symbiosis-related events from database searches of reports, media, and key consulting and business organizations and examine trends, mechanisms, and motivations of industrial symbiosis practice by surveying key practitioners and academics.

We investigated aquaculture production of Asian tiger shrimp, whiteleg shrimp, giant river prawn, tilapia, and pangasius catfish in Bangladesh, China, Thailand, and Vietnam by using life cycle assessments (LCAs), with the purpose of evaluating the comparative eco-efficiency of producing different aquatic food products. Our starting hypothesis was that different production systems are associated with significantly different environmental impacts, as the production of these aquatic species differs in intensity and management practices. In order to test this hypothesis, we estimated each system's global warming, eutrophication, and freshwater ecotoxicity impacts. The contribution to these impacts and the overall dispersions relative to results were propagated by Monte Carlo simulations and dependent sampling. Paired testing showed significant (p < 0.05) differences between the median impacts of most production systems in the intraspecies comparisons, even after a Bonferroni correction. For the full distributions instead of only the median, only for Asian tiger shrimp did more than 95% of the propagated Monte Carlo results favor certain farming systems. The major environmental hot-spots driving the differences in environmental performance among systems were fishmeal from mixed fisheries for global warming, pond runoff and sediment discards for eutrophication, and agricultural pesticides, metals, benzalkonium chloride, and other chlorine-releasing compounds for freshwater ecotoxicity. The Asian aquaculture industry should therefore strive toward farming systems relying upon pelleted species-specific feeds, where the fishmeal inclusion is limited and sourced sustainably. Also, excessive nutrients should be recycled in integrated organic agriculture together with efficient aeration solutions powered by renewable energy sources.

MỞ ĐẦUMôi trường và những vấn đề liên quan đến quản lý môi trường đang ngày càng được chú trọng trong bối cảnh phát triển kinh tế và thích ứng với biến đổi khí hậu toàn cầu, đặc biệt là xác định sức tải môi trường của thủy vực và dự báo biến động của nó trong quá trình phát triển kinh tế -xã hội (KTXH) làm cơ sở cho việc đề xuất các giải pháp quản lý, góp phần giảm thiểu nguy cơ môi trường, đảm bảo sự phát triển bền vững.Sức tải môi trường (environmental capacity) là một thuộc tính của môi trường và có thể được hiểu như khả năng tiếp nhận các hoạt động hay tốc độ của một hoạt động nào đó (lượng chất thải, sản lượng khai thác trên một đơn vị thời gian, trong một không gian …) mà không gây ra hiệu ứng bất lợi [12]. Đánh giá sức tải (assessment of environmental capacity) có ý nghĩa quan trọng trong quản lý tổng hợp và phát triển bền vững vì nó xác định giới hạn tối đa sức tải có thể khai thác từ khu vực nghiên cứu trong bối cảnh phát triển kinh tế xã hội tương ứng mà không gây ra những thay đổi bất lợi cho cả hệ sinh thái tự nhiên cũng như cấu trúc và chức năng của các thực thể xã hội [7]. Sức tải môi trường đã và đang ứng dụng rộng rãi để tính toán khả năng "đồng hóa" chất thải từ các hoạt động khác nhau của một vùng, một thủy vực, một hệ sinh thái … nhằm duy trì và quản lý hệ thống một cách hiệu quả, đảm bảo phát triển bền vững. Trên thế giới, nghiên cứu và ứng dụng sức tải môi trường đã được phát huy mạnh mẽ, nhất là trong nuôi trồng thủy sản và phát triển du lịch [3-6, 9-11, 13, 15-17, 21, 26, 28, 31].Ở Việt Nam, nghiên cứu và ứng dụng sức tải môi trường chỉ mới được tiếp cận và triển khai trong khoảng 10 năm trở lại đây.
