We present the JaCaMo+ framework for programming multiagent systems (MAS), where agents interact thanks to commitment-based interaction protocols. Commitment protocols are realized as artifacts that maintain a social state and notify to the participating agents those events that are relevant to the interaction. We discuss the advantages, like increased modularity and flexibility, that are brought by commitment-ruled interactions with respect to other proposals. We trace back such advantages to the possibility of relying on a standardized commitment lifecycle. We explain how to use the framework to program interacting agents by using the Netbill protocol as running example, and the Gold Miners scenario as a more complex programming example.

Process Coordination with Business Artifacts and Multiagent Technologies

This work is set in the context of data-centric approaches, and is motivated by the observation that business artifacts are not devised as natural means of coordination, despite the fact that they have this potential. Instead of using orchestration and choreography languages, we propose to enrich business artifacts with a normative layer that defines the coordination, basing our approach on social commitments. The straightforward advantage is an increased reusability of both processes and business artifacts, thanks to a clear decoupling between the coordination logic and the business logic. We show how social commitments can be leveraged for modularizing the design of distributed tasks and discuss the advantages of the approach from a software engineering perspective.

Research on Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) has led to the development of several models, languages, and technologies for programming not only agents, but also their interaction, the application environment where they are situated, as well as the organization in which they participate. Research on those topics moved from agent-oriented programming towards multi-agent-oriented programming (MAOP). A MAS program is then designed and developed using a structured set of concepts and associated first-class design and programming abstractions that go beyond the concepts normally associated with agents. They include those related to environment, interaction, and organization. JaCaMo is a platform for MAOP built on top of three seamlessly integrated dimensions (i.e. structured sets of concepts and associated execution platforms): for programming belief desire intention (BDI) agents, their artefact-based environments, and their normative organizations. The key purpose of our work on JaCaMo is to support programmers in exploring the synergy between these dimensions, providing a comprehensive programming model, as well as a corresponding platform for developing and running MAS. This paper provides a practical overview of MAOP using JaCaMo. We show how emphasizing one particular dimension leads to different solutions to the same problem, and discuss the issues of each of those solutions.
