Towards an Open Testbed for Tactile Cyber Physical Systems

Abstract: In this paper, we consider Tactile Cyber Physical Systems (TCPS), which differ from typical CPS in that haptic sensory feedback is included. In particular, we design and implement a TCPS testbed, called TCPSbed, using well-defined components and interfaces glued together using APIs. In addition to real connections, our testbed supports the interconnection of components over an NS3-emulated network. The testbed also supports the integration of applications that mimic the behaviour of real-world embedded objects… Show more

“…We leverage this method for TCPS by replacing the human operator with a known Proportional Integral (PI) controller and analyzing its response to the slave side step changes. In this section, we first describe the components of the TCPS testbed implemented in our lab [16]. We then describe how to conduct step response experiments using this testbed in both haptic and non-haptic settings to evaluate kinematic-haptic and kinematic-video loops, respectively.…”

“…This is accomplished by replacing the human operator with a controller with known characteristics and analyzing its response to slave side step changes. We had introduced this framework to characterize control loop quality of TCPS in [16]. However, this work is the first attempt to use the step response method for evaluating TCPS.…”

“…The main features of the OVGU-HC are its experimental description language (DES-Cript), its experimental automation services, and the various hardware available for conducting experiments. Finally, an open Tactile Cyber-Physical Systems (TCPS) testbed is developed in [124], whose main purpose is rapid prototyping and evaluation of TCPS applications. Different from previous testbeds without assessment means, the engineers equip their testbed with tools for evaluating latency and management performance, which are key features of TCPS.…”
