Abstract:Religion, in both the sense of the institution and religious practices, is embedded in societythe social forms of religious life are fully integrated into the structures of society. Secularization is a source of great debate, and is a prominent feature in the sociology of religion literature. The need to examine the extent to which Catholicism in Ireland has been affected by the secular movement that has swept through Western Europe is essential to understanding religion in contemporary society, and the everyday meanings people attach to religious objects/institution/terminology at the local level. Through a close micro study of a small Donegal community I examine patterns of religious belief and practice and how these have undergone change in response to wider socio-cultural transformations associated with such things as urbanization and globalization. I therefore, establish the community's level of religiosity -from spirituality to practice. From this, a test of the applicability of Davies (1994) 'believing without belonging' theory to the local Irish case is conducted.

“…Indeed, secularization has a wide variety of meanings ranging from declining levels of church attendance and religious belief, to the diminution of institutional influence and religious authority, through to the rise of secular perspectives in science, politics, education and other areas of social life (Chaves 1994;Tschannen 1991;Gorski 2003). These varying meanings imply that secularization operates at different levels of the social structure from the individual level of analysis right up to the organizational and societal levels (Dobbelaere 1999). Sociologists have sought to generalize the empirical scope of these conceptual understandings, but religious change may be too complex and historically contingent in unique regional settings, to allow for such general application.…”

Social Correlates of Church Attendance in Three European Catholic Countries

The sociology of religion literature recognizes secularization as an uneven process complicated by individual and country-level variables. However, considerably less attention has been given to how correlates of church attendance vary across divergent settings within a single religious denomination. Employing recent data from Belgium, Ireland, and Slovenia, we test whether the belief, ideological support for the church, and religious commitment correlates of religious behaviour are similar across these Catholic countries and whether there are any remaining country effects influencing church attendance. The results of ordered logit regression models show, on the one hand, the correlates of church attendance are basically the same across the three countries and, on the other, that country effects remain even when controlling for the key explanatory variables and other covariates. These empirical findings suggest the need to develop a more contextualbased understandings of secularization, focusing on the influence of cultural factors operative in nationally-specific settings.

ResumoAspectos da secularização da esfera política no Brasil são colocados em perspectiva, salientando-se a relação entre a autonomização dos poderes espiritual e temporal e a extinção do padroado. Sobretudo ao longo da segunda metade do século XIX, circunstâncias e eventos históricos, tais como as querelas relativas à defesa do padroado. bem como as ideias ultramontanas explicitadas no episódio da Questão Religiosa contribuíram para a compreensão de rupturas e permanências nos campos das ideias políticas e das práticas sociais, o que permite o entendimento do processo de autonomização da esfera política no Brasil como individualidade histórica. Traço marcante dessa individualidade histórica é o descompasso entre as representações e práticas sociais presentes nos quadros do catolicismo popular e autonomização das esferas que se configura no plano da política em relação à religião.Palavras-chave: Secularização.
