Towards a Smarter Energy Management System for Hybrid Vehicles: A Comprehensive Review of Control Strategies

Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive review of energy management control strategies utilized in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). These can be categorized as rule-based strategies and optimization-based strategies. Rule-based strategies, as the most basic strategy, are widely used due to their simplicity and practical application. The focus of rule-based strategies is to determine and optimize the optimal threshold for mode switching; however, they fall into a local optimal solutions. To have better performance … Show more

“…The same classification was carried out in the case of the work of Xu et al [8], where the EMSs were firstly categorized as rule-based strategies and optimization-based strategies. On the one hand, two strategies are categorized as rule-based strategies: deterministic rule-based (RB) and fuzzy logic-based (FLB).…”

“…In this study, different approaches that can be integrated into EMSs are examined to enable energy management systems for real-time implementation. Authors in [51] have categorized the existing EMSs by considering data-based approaches such as machine learning-based EMSs. Overall, these aforementioned review articles indicate the need for a separate study that will enumerate the requirements of an iEMS.…”

“…2 (f), a two-stage process is imperative to realize the energy management in the proposed cooperative control strategy for cPHEVs. According to the shared traffic information, the future velocity profile in each segment will be predicted by the method that was proposed in our former work [42]. Based on the forecasted velocity profile, the reference battery SOC trajectory in each route segment will be globally calculated in the master level control unit installed in the MECU.…”
