Towards a highly efficient air purifier using annular photonic crystals in UV regimes

Abstract: Air purifiers play a vital role in fighting the spread of airborne transmitted diseases like COVID-19, rubeola, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and varicella-zoster, which represent a fundamental challenge.

“…The thickness and refractive index of PSi layers A and B were d 1 , d 2 and n 1 , n 2 , respectively. The radial distance ( ρ i ) between the axis of the symmetry of the structure and the outer edge of the concentric cylindrical layer i is given by: 28–30 here, δ (= d 1 + d 2 ) and N ′ (= N /2) are used to describe the period and period number of both APC 1 and APC 2 . The magnetic permeability of the PSi layer was assumed to be 1 due to its non-magnetic behavior.…”

“…By modifying the refractive index of the defect, the properties of the defect peak can be altered [16,17]; such tunability opens the door for many different sensors, extending from chemical compounds to different biological cells and tissues [18][19][20][21]. Many materials have been examined to enhance the PCs' photonic bandgap properties and sensing abilities, ranging from metals [22], dielectrics [23,24], semiconductors [17], superconductors [25], and plasma. Recently, metamaterials have been identified as a possible candidate to enhance the PCs' properties [26].…”

“…Another way to increase UV dose with the same UV source and exposure time is to use an effective reflector. In this regard, photonic crystals (PCs) receive considerable attention due to its high reflectivity [12,13]. PCs are periodic arrangement structures with periodic refractive index functions that represent a building block in many optical, physical, and biomedical applications [14].…”
