Toward the experimental control of dreaming: A review of the literature.

Abstract: The study of nocturnal dreaming has been mainly a matter of correlational studies. This article brings together and reviews those scattered studies in which an attempt was made to actively influence dreaming. Despite a great diversity of methods, aims, and results, it is apparent that dreaming can be experimentally manipulated, and thus it may be possible to develop a functional experimental approach in which dreams become more immediate and observable aspects of behavior, rather than only memories.Scientific … Show more

“…Wiseman however does state that a priming effect may be in place and that even when the app was playing no sound at all during the night, "many still dreamed about the scenery of their chosen soundscape" [12:49]. This could although, as other researchers have concluded, be due to the finding that sound stimuli are less effective than other stimuli, especially somatosensory stimuli at influencing the content of dreams [7,10]. In any case, Wiseman has created a platform that offers a first, yet limited, personally controllable interface for our dreams.…”

“…Rather than use any of the various automatic procedures of Tart (1969) or Green et al, I used instead the method of Bertini et al of continuous reporting which usually kept the subjects from falling asleep. This also facilitated the reporting of imagery, the memory of which is very brief.…”
