Toward the development of a mathematical model for the bulk in situ radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of nano‐additives

Abstract: The effect of nano‐additives on the radical polymerization kinetics of methyl methacrylate is investigated through a simulation model. The mathematical model developed is based on the elementary chemical reactions that take place and the detailed mass balance equations. To account for the effect of diffusion‐controlled phenomena on the initiation, propagation, and termination reaction, appropriate theoretical equations based on sound principles such as the free volume theory were developed. The model predictio… Show more

“…The main feature of the bulk in situ polymerization is the existence of diffusion controlled reactions at high conversion. Besides the large number of published work on diffusion controlled radical polymerization only a few models for the bulk in situ diffusion controlled polymerization reactions appeared in the literature . Moreover, although synthesis of nanocomposites of GO with several polymers has been published, incorporation of GO in the butyl methacrylate (BMA) polymerization has not so far appeared in literature.…”

“…Free radical polymerization and the diffusive effects involved have been subject of study by decades. [1] However, due to its complexity, this reaction has not been completely understood at all. A huge number of products are worldwide produced by this process, [2] so it is important to increase our comprehension by means of mathematical models that can be used as predictive tools for facing challenges in laboratory and in industry.…”
