Toward Tactile Internet in Beyond 5G Era: Recent Advances, Current Issues, and Future Directions

Abstract: Tactile Internet (TI) is envisioned to create a paradigm shift from the content-oriented communications to steer/control-based communications by enabling real-time transmission of haptic information (i.e., touch, actuation, motion, vibration, surface texture) over Internet in addition to the conventional audiovisual and data traffics. This emerging TI technology, also considered as the next evolution phase of Internet of Things (IoT), is expected to create numerous opportunities for technology markets in a wid… Show more

“…A tutorial [19] that focuses on providing a Tactile Internet in beyond 5G era has been published very recently. It introduces a general framework for wireless Tactile Internet, reviews three Tactile Internet domains (i.e., haptic communications, wireless augmented/virtual reality), discusses security/privacy and identifies open research challenges.…”

“…We have selected the papers that meet any of the two following criteria: (i) the term Tactile Internet is specifically mentioned in the title, (ii) the Tactile Internet is considered explicitly in the paper as the main motivation of the work. These papers are classified into four main categories: (i) architectures, protocols, and intelligent • Provide a general introduction to the topic (e.g., vision, enabler, • Do not systematically and critically review [2]- [4], [6], [11]- [19] key concepts). existing solutions.…”

“…TI is expected to enable low latency in the communication which will be useful in many applications related to health, industrial, business, entertainment sectors which require real time processing, automation to achieve the expected performance of the system [169,170]. Few research works have incorporated TI with NOMA [171,172].…”
