Toward objective assessment of the conservation status of (the Natura 2000) forest habitat types: A comparison of a qualitative and a quantitative modeling approach

Abstract: To halt the loss of biodiversity in natural habitats, the EU passed the Habitats Directive and established the Natura 2000 network. The network captured forest habitats and habitat types, whose conservation status must be reported under Article 17 of the Directive. Hence, the harmonization of habitat assessment methods and reporting formats are a critical issue. So far, the EU Commission and Member States have managed to design and issue reporting guidelines. However, as many of these reports are largely based… Show more

“…Based on our experience, the application of fuzzy logic, which facilitates the use and capture of vague notions, enabled expert biologists to explicitly state their knowledge in a natural manner, similar to natural language. A good example of using fuzzy logic can be found in conservation biology [29, 30], whereas it is minimal in animals, especially in insects. Furthermore, the co-operation of biologists with mathematicians brought new insights and ideas to further develop tools for fuzzy modelling.…”

“…The most critical issues were the demographic portrayal of stands and tree species composition. Both factors also affect forest biodiversity and the conservation status of forest habitat types (Kutnar and Dakskobler, 2014;Grošelj et al, 2015;Kovač and Grošelj, 2018). Another concern in the long run was the felling/increment ratio.…”
