Toward a sustainable modern electricity grid: The effects of smart metering and program investments on demand-side management performance in the US electricity sector 2009-2012

Abstract: Building a sustainable modern electricity sector is a key part of the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Smart meters are expected to contribute to the achievement of this goal by providing new demand-side management opportunities for utilities. Attempting to address existing gaps in the extant literature, this paper examines the effects of metering technologies and demand-side management program investments using panel data from 87 American electricity utilities for the period 2009-2012. “…E B t = charging quality at time t, E B t−1 = charging quality at the time (t-1), σ = self-discharge rate per hour, E RES t = total energy generated by renewable sources, E D t = load demand, η inv = inverter efficiency, η b = battery efficiency. The SOC of the battery for time t can be calculated using equation (4). Once the SOC of the battery is set for the first hour of the algorithm, the SOC can be calculated for the following hours using the simple production function, load demand, and previous SOC value (for time t −1).…”

“…While managing various building systems, the automation system ensures the operational performance of the facility as well as the comfort and safety of the building occupants. Today, BAS is a widely accepted and adopted technology in houses, buildings, residential and industrial complexes [4]. It is concerned with improving the interaction among integrated systems and the habitants/users of the buildings.…”

“…In order to cope with existing technologies and to be able to contribute to the future development of the technology of smart metering, several leading academic and research institutions have started including the smart meter design and technologies in their electrical engineering curricula and research programs. QU is one of these institutions that introduces topics such as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and smart grid, to graduate future engineers to be more knowledgeable and trained on the 21 st century grid technologies. Moreover, Qatar is moving toward developing a new electric grid infrastructure to enable smartness .…”
