Tourism Development, Environment and Policies: Differences between Domestic and International Tourists

Abstract: Using panel data from the 17 underdeveloped provinces of China for 2005–2015, the author explored the differential impact of air (environment) quality and government policies on domestic and international visitors. Through econometric model analysis, the authors corroborated that domestic and international visitors react differently to air (environment) quality. In addition, domestic and international tourists have different responses to urbanization and transportation. Marketization is conducive to the develo… Show more

“…One stream of literature relied on questionnaire survey tools to measure travelers' subjectively perceived level of air pollution, which is actually a psychological response to the actual air quality (e.g., [2,5,28,29]). Another stream of literature examined the impacts of actual air pollution on the tourism industry by applying different scientifically measured indices of air pollution (e.g., [9][10][11]30]). Table 1 presents a non-exhaustive summary of previous studies.…”

“…Although there were uncertainties associated with the remote sensing measurements (for example, affected by weather and the precision of the electrical instruments), the accuracy and reliability of the PM 2.5 grids data have been highly appreciated. In fact, both data sources have been widely utilized in previous research (e.g., [8,9,11,12,42]). The data from the two data sources were highly correlated.…”

“…Although several previous studies have empirically investigated the same research topic, there was no consensus on the magnitude of the impact of air pollution. For example, Liu et al [16] used PM 2.5 to measure the degree of air pollution in 17 undeveloped provinces in China during 2005-2015, and reported that air pollution had no statistically significant effect on inbound tourist arrivals. Differently, a study by Tang et al [17] indicated a significant and large impact of air pollution.…”

“…The research of the these studies mainly focuses on the accounting of carbon emissions from tourism, such as tourism destinations of different scales [1,4,8,9], individual tourism departments [10][11][12][13], and different types of tourism activities [5,14,15]. In recent years, based on the accounting of tourism carbon emissions, some scholars have begun to explore the key factors that affect tourism carbon emissions [16][17][18], the relationship between tourism carbon emissions and regional economic development [19][20][21], and the evaluation of regional tourism low-carbon strategy and policy [7,22].…”
