Molluscicides can play an important role in the control of schistosomiasis because snails of the genus Biomphalaria act as intermediate hosts for the parasite. Schistosomiasis is one of 13 neglected tropical diseases with high morbidity and mortality that collectively affect one billion of the world’s poorest population, mainly in developing countries. Thiopalmyrone (1) and palmyrrolinone (2), metabolites isolated from extracts of a Palmyra Atoll environmental assemblage of two cyanobacteria, cf. Oscillatoria and Hormoscilla spp., represent new and potent molluscicidal chemotypes against B. glabrata (LC50 = 8.3 and 6.0 μM, respectively). A slight enhancement in molluscicidal effect (LC50 = 5.0 μM) was observed when these two natural products were utilized as an equimolar binary mixture.

Validation of intercultural sensitivity three-factor model in Malaysian context

Abstract.A plethora of studies have indicated the importance of intercultural sensitivity (IS) in today's highly interconnected, global world. Despite that, in Malaysian context, very limited reliable instruments are available to measure intercultural sensitivity. A study using Malaysian dataset by Tamam (2010) found a three-factor model of the Chen and Starosta's five-factor model of Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS); however, the model was exploratory and has yet to be validated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to further validate the intercultural sensitivity three-factor model within Malaysian collectivistic and multicultural context. Using survey as a means of data collection, 1000 undergraduate students at three higher education institutions completed self-administered questionnaires. The three-factor model found earlier was subject to Confirmatory Factor Analysis using Analysis of Moments Structures (Amos) software. The results showed that the intercultural sensitivity three-factor model showed a good fit thus indicating that the three-factor model is a viable alternative to the original model. In conclusion, the threefactor model is a valid and reliable instrument to measure intercultural sensitivity within Malaysian collectivistic and multicultural context.

a b s t r a c tThe 2Z-isomer of malyngamide K has been isolated along with the known compounds malyngamide C, deoxy-C and K, and characterized from a Papua New Guinea field collection of the cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula. The planar structure was deduced by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic and mass spectral data interpretation. The absolute configurations were determined on the basis of spectroscopic techniques, chemical degradation and DFT theoretical calculations.
