“…Multiple somatic symptoms, such as headache and musculoskeletal (MS) pain, have been associated with an increased risk of poor health status [1][2][3] and high health care use [3][4][5] independently of the etiology of the symptoms. This indicates an importance of focusing on multiple symptoms in health research and not only on a few specific symptoms or diseases.…”

“…This indicates an importance of focusing on multiple symptoms in health research and not only on a few specific symptoms or diseases. Studies looking at the epidemiology of multiple symptoms have mainly used the number of symptoms to identify groups at risk [1][2][3][4] using standard symptom questionnaires, eg, the Patient Health Questionnaire 6 and the Symptom Checklist. 7 However, it can be questioned if this method identifies the persons at the highest risk of poor health and hence leads to blurred or distorted results.…”

“…In diagnostic follow-up studies, only 0.5% of initial diagnoses of FSS had to be changed into a diagnosis of definite medical disease, whereas an initial thorough evaluation of patients said to have FSS reveals underlying organic pathology in up to 8% of cases [9,10]. Importantly, the overall number of bodily symptoms is a strong predictor of disability and health care use and appears to be a better measure of overall severity than the severity of a single symptom or single FSS or the description of bodily symptoms as “medically unexplained” [11,12,13]. High health anxiety is an additional, independent predictor of health care use [14,15].…”

“…3 Ayrıca belirtilerin belirleyici olmayıp bulunan belirtinin işaretlenmesine yöne-lik çalışmalar da bedensel belirti bozukluğunun kavramlaştırılmasına katkıda bulunmuştur. 4 Diğer yandan önceden hipokondriyazis olarak bilinen bozukluk hastalık anksiyetesi bozukluğu (health anxiety disorder) başlığı altında yeniden kavramlaştırılmış ve hastanın hastalık anksiyetesine vurgu yapan biçimde yeniden düzenlen-miştir. 3 Konversiyon bozukluğunda ise önemli değişiklikler yapılmamıştır.…”
