Total solar spectrum energy converter with integrated photovoltaics, thermoelectrics, and thermal energy storage: System modeling and design

Abstract: A total-spectrum-utilizing integrated photovoltaic (PV), thermoelectric (TEG), and thermal energy storage fluid (TES) solar energy converter (PV-TEG-TES) with novel device architecture is proposed, and its performance is modeled to demonstrate its viability and optimize its system-level design. By incorporating a top-layer GaAs PV, ultraviolet and visible light is absorbed and converted directly to electricity, while infrared radiation passes through the PV. This infrared radiation is then captured by the TEG … Show more

“…With the advancement of technologies, the penetration of rooftop Solar PhotoVoltaics (SPV) [1] and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) such as Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) has increased consumer participation in energy generation and management in the Smart Grid (SG) system [2][3][4][5]. In SG, one of the most crucial approaches, i.e., Peer-to-Peer (P2P) transactive energy trading, reduces the burden on electric utility companies.…”

“…Thereby, the research results from the article [7][8][9][10][11] confirm that the orientation of solar panels can increase the efficiency of the conversion system by 20% up to 50%, which significantly increases electricity production. In [11], there was a study of a three-phase inverter representing an essential part of the photovoltaic systems, which allowed us to take an idea on the conditioning and the simulation of the motor used in our realized prototype.…”

“…The fact that they can be easily scaled up is a contributing factor too. In solar cells, they are used to enhance their efficiency by acting as charge separators (Farrar-Foley et al, 2021;Guo et al, 2014) and can also be used as thermoelectric sensors. Owing to these possibilities of diverse applications and given the development in the field of thermoelectrics in the last two decades, it has immensely drawn our attention.…”
