Total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of Ulam raja (Cosmos caudatus) and quantification of its selected marker compounds: Effect of extraction

Abstract: The effect of heating time (30, 45, and 60 min) and temperature (45, 65, and 85°C) on the extraction yield (total soluble solids) of Ulam raja (Cosmos caudatus) was studied using face-centered composite designresponse surface methodology. Total phenolic content and antioxidant activity (TEAC DPPH) of samples obtained by aqueous extraction under different temperature and time were determined using Folin-Ciocalteau and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity assays, respectively. The yield, total pheno… Show more

“…Cosmos caudatus has various medicinal properties, including antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, bone protective and antimicrobial activity [16]. Flavonoid components in the lyophilized CC extract include quercitrin, catechin, and rutin [17]. Previous studies have reported that PS extract possesses many pharmacological benefits including antibacterial [18], anti-inflammatory [19,20,21] and antioxidant activities [22,23].…”

“…The main compounds detected in the CCW extract by high resolution LC-UV-MS/MS in the positive ionisation mode were assigned as amino acids, flavonol glycosides, including those derived from quercetin and kaempferol, and flavone C-glycosides derived from apigenin (vicenin-2 and vitexin) ( Table 3). Flavonol and flavone glycosides, and amino acids, have been shown to occur in this plant species previously 24,31 . Specifically, a previous study reported a range of quercetin glycosides to occur in leaves of this species, 31,32 which is in agreement with the compounds detected in CCW in this study.…”

“…The difference in CCW activities between the two assays may be caused by the structure difference of the preformed radicals. 20 C. caudatus leaf extracts have been shown to have high antioxidant activities in different studies [21][22][23][24][25] . In one study, the antioxidant capacity of C. caudatus was reported to have the highest potency among 21 tropical plant extracts evaluated, and was comparable in potency to some synthetic antioxidants.…”

“…Extraction conditions such as solvent type, solvent concentration, liquid-to-solid ratio, temperature, and time are important parameters should be optimized. [1,17,18] In this study, extraction conditions such as solvent type, extraction time, and solvent:solid ratio (v:w) were examined for the determination of anthocyanin contents in strawberry. When a parameter was tested, optimum values of other parameters were used.…”
