Total organochloride and organobromide determinations in aqueous samples by microwave induced plasma-optical emission spectrometry

Abstract: Abstract. The element specific detection of the adsorbable organic halogen (AOX) parameter in waters has been investigated by adsorption of the halogenated analytes on activated carbon, incineration to yield carbon dioxide and hydrogen halide, trapping of the halide on a 0.01 M sodium hydroxide solution and online introduction of the halogen formed by continuous oxidation into a microwave induced plasma (MIP). Detection has been carried out by optical emission spectrometry (OES) in the visible spectral region.T… Show more

“…The application of determination of selected elements as e.g. Na [4], Cu, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cd, Zn, Ni, Au [5], Ag, Pd, Pt [6], Hg [7], K, Ca, Mg, Sr [8], Cl, Br [9], Si [10], Ba, Pb [11] first of all have based on laboratory-made analytical instruments. The different plasma gases has been used in MIP-OES technique: argon [5,6] or helium [7,9], but the use of nitrogen [12] (generating from atmospheric air) allowed significantly decrease the operating costs [10] and made the technique competitive to inductively coupled plasma based techniques [3].…”

“…Additionally, several non-standardized methods for AOX determination can be used, such as photometry, combustion ion chromatography (C/IC), combustion ion chromatography titration, ultrasonic extraction-high temperature combustion absorption-ion chromatography, neutron activated ion analysis (NAA), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP/MS), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP/AES), gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS), liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC/MS), precursor ion scan of triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (PIS of QqQ MS), and flow injection analysis (FIA). The limitations of the methods depend on the sample matrix and AOX content [12][13][14].…”
