“…In the present study, the complication rate was 16.9% and the reoperation rate was 8.3%, which was comparable to the results of previous studies. Meanwhile, most of the complications occurred at an early stage (within 3 months after surgery), which is also in accordance with other studies 9,15 . The high complication rates would inevitably affect the survivorship of the prosthesis and functional outcome of patients after TKA, so it is important to identify related risk factors for TKA following femoral or tibial fractures.…”

“…Shearer et al 8 reported on 46 patients who underwent TKA for osteoarthritis secondary to femoral or tibial fracture with a follow-up of 52 months; the knee score improved from 30 to 57 and the function score improved from 39 to 46. Abdel et al 15 reported on 45 patients who underwent TKA for osteoarthritis secondary to fracture of the tibial plateau with a follow-up of 16 years, and the ROM improved from 99 to 105 , and the Knee Society knee score and function score improved from 44 and 52 to 80 and 70, respectively. The results of our study were similar to those observed in these studies.…”

“…Metaphyseal osteotomy and perfect contact between the bone surfaces (without cement interposition) reduced the risk of nonunion. A recent study by Abdel et al 14 determined the long-term outcome (15 years) of 62 TKA procedures in patients with previous tibial plateau fracture. The authors showed that survival free of revision for aseptic loosening was 96%, while survival free of any revision was lower (82%), mainly due to polyethylene wear.…”

“…Similarly, THA for femoral neck fractures is associated with a higher risk of aseptic loosening 43 . TKA following open reduction and internal fixation of a tibial plateau fracture presents similar technical challenges but does not increase the risk of aseptic loosening 44 . Even though evidence for a direct impact of skeletal degeneration and inflammatory processes on patient risk remains inconclusive, it is likely that the physiological condition of the patient will modify the cellular and molecular processes that guide skeletal tissue repair around the implant after surgery.…”
