Total error vs. measurement uncertainty: revolution or evolution?

Abstract: Abstract:The first strategic EFLM conference "Defining analytical performance goals, 15 years after the Stockholm Conference" was held in the autumn of 2014 in Milan. It maintained the Stockholm 1999 hierarchy of performance goals but rearranged them and established five task and finish groups to work on topics related to analytical performance goals including one on the "total error" theory. Jim Westgard recently wrote a comprehensive overview of performance goals and of the total error theory critical of the… Show more

“…It has been argued that the TE concept only deserves the predicate "total" when all kinds of errors are included [11]. Notably, the permissible TAE is often derived from reference intervals [36,64,65] that are substantially influenced by other types of errors (variation) than the analytical variation.…”

“…In IQC, the TAE and MU models approach each other and can become similar, and the goal setting developed in the TAE model combining bias and imprecision is also applicable for MU [11].…”

“…La proposta non è stata accettata da CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) ed è stata criticata, dando origine a un serrato dibattito sulla rivista Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine [11][12][13].…”

“…Two papers published in this issue of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine further discuss the subject [2,3], which was revitalized by the organization of the 1st EFLM Strategic Conference in Milan on the analytical performance specifications at the end of 2014 [4]. The organizers considered it timely to address the topic of performance specifications both because it was 15 years since it was previously addressed and because performance specifications are more and more central for the clinical application of test measurements [5,6].…”
