Total dose and heavy ions evaluation of UC1806 pulse width modulator from Unitrode

Abstract: idth Modulator. in B CMOS technology, was evaluated for both total dose and heavy ions effects. The heavy ions testing was performed in both static and dynamic modes. A high switch off DC/DC converter sensitivity was observed, unpredictable under static test only.

“…Laser energy did not affect the transient amplitude and duration; only a minimum energy was needed to create a transient. These results are interesting since they differ from a typical behavior observed in linear regulators where the transient characteristics are a strong function of ion energy [1]- [10]. The SET sensitive area is quite small as well.…”

“…Ion strikes in the sensitive portion of a typical analog dc-dc converter (i.e., ramp generator or comparator) causes missing pulses within the PWM duty cycle signal [1]- [10], resulting in long transient pulses at the converter output. A similar problem exists for linear regulators, laser pulse strikes causing settling errors at the error amplifier's high output impedance.…”

“…The different event types observed at the output of the SG1525 are shown, and the type of circuitry associated with each type of event is discussed. In addition to power converters, SEE in pulse width modulators (PWMs) is a significant issue in many other applications [6], [7], so understanding the SEE response of the PWM devices considered here is important.…”
