Total anthocyanin content determination in intact açaí (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) and palmitero-juçara (Euterpe edulis Mart.) fruit using near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) and multivariate calibration

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIR), and multivariate calibration potential as a rapid method to determinate anthocyanin content in intact fruit (açaí and palmitero-juçara). Several multivariate calibration techniques, including partial least squares (PLS), interval partial least squares, genetic algorithm, successive projections algorithm, and net analyte signal were compared and validated by establishing figures of merit. Suitable results were obtained with the … Show more

“…Then, the readings were performed on Shimadzu UVMini 1240 (Shimadzu Corporation, Kyoto, Japan) at a wavelength of 520 and 700 nm for anthocyanin, respectively. For calculating the anthocyanin concentration, the following formula was employed:Where, TAC = total anthocyanin content in %; A = (A520 nm -A700 nm)pH1.0 -(A520 nm -A700 nm)pH4.5; MW (molecular weight) = 449.2 mol -1 ; DF = dilution factor; W = sample weight in mg; l = optical path in cm;  = 26.900 M extinction coefficient in L mol -1 cm -1 to cyd-3-glu The anthocyanin of the açaí fruits was expressed as cyanidin-3-glucose (Inácio et al, 2013) and this method is based on the fact that the monomeric anthocyanins undergo reversible structural change in function of the pH.In this assay the equipment Dissolution Model 299-6 was used (New Ethics, Ltda. Sao Paulo, Brazil) with rotation speed of 75 rpm.…”

“…The antioxidant properties of açai have been previously described in the literature (Kuskoski et al, 2006;Kang et al, 2011;Gordon et al, 2012;Inácio et al, 2013). However, although incorporation of açai glycolic extracts into sunscreen emulsion did not increase SPF in vivo, this formulation may be effective as an antioxidant cosmetic product.…”

“…is a palm native to the Amazon. Its fruits are of economic importance in the Brazilian state of Pará and contain in addition to essential nutrients, anthocyanins, a class of polyphenols to which antioxidant properties have been attributed (Kuskoski et al, 2006;Kang et al, 2011;Gordon et al, 2012;Inácio et al, 2013). Anthocyanins are the predominant polyphenols and account for more than 90% of açai´s total polyphenolic contents (Pacheco-Palencia et al, 2009).…”
