The açai (Euterpe oleracea Mart) fruit pulp is extensively used in Brazil as food among other uses. The health benefits of açai are largely reported by the Amazon inhabitants. Nonetheless, just a few pharmacological and toxicological studies were made to probe the innocuousness and the safety of the use of this product. The aims of this work were to update knowledge about the chemical composition, pharmacological and toxicological studies of the fruits and to identify possible vacuum of knowledge in the use, evaluation, and characterization of E. oleracea Mart (Açai) as a promising Amazon superfruit. It was made a draw out internet revision, especially in databases as NCBI, SCOPUS, PUBMED, SCIELO, and ELSEVIER by using the keywords E. oleracea, açai, nutraceuticals and food supplementations. Also, it was looked for each one of the ethnobotanical uses reported for this plant species combined with the first keywords. A complete record of the chemical composition of this species was achieved. Just two studies in humans were found in the literature using the açai fruit pulp. There is no sufficient systematic evidence to assure that all of the ethnobotanical uses of this species are true. A great emptiness of scientific knowledge related to the real benefits of this plant species exist. There exist neither pharmaceutical forms nor standardized product derived from the açai fruit. Until now, the number of scientific studies that allow the validaton of the ethnopharmacological practices, the innocuousness and the safety of the use of this plant fruit is insufficient.

“…Fotoprotektivni potencijal emulzije tipa ulje u vodi u koju je inkorporirano 5% glikolnog ekstrakta plodova asai palme (INCI: Euterpe Oleracea Fruit Extract) sa organskim UV filterima ispitivan je in vivo i in vitro spektrofotometrijski prema preporukama i vodičima profesionalnog udruženja evropske industrije za ličnu negu Cosmetics Europe [133,134] uz određivanje faktora zaštite od UVB i UVA zračenja, SPF i UVA-PF. Dobijeni rezultati ukazali su da prisustvo ekstrakta ploda asai palme u emulziji koja već sadrži organske UV filtere utiče na povećanje faktora zaštite od UV zračenja (SPF = 25,3 ± 4,5 u odnosu na SPF = 22,5 ± 2,4; UVA-PF = 14,97 ± 0,44 u odnosu na UVA-PF = 13,38 ± 0,52) usled sinergističkog delovanja [135].…”

Poznato je da produženo izlaganje kože ultravioletnom (UV) zračenju dovodi do pojave crvenila, solarnog еritеmа ili оpеkоtinа, da utiče na strukturu vezivnog tkiva kože, proizvodnju slobodnih radikala, stimuliše proizvodnju matriks metaloproteinaza i da može dovesti do razvoja kаncеrа kоžе. Svetska zdravstvena organizacija predlaže niz preventivnih mera za zaštitu kože od negativnih efekata UV zračenja, među kojima je i primena na kožu proizvoda za zaštitu od UV zračenja. Jedna od strategija za poboljšanje kvaliteta i efikasnosti proizvoda za zaštitu od UV zračenja je korišćenje novih, efikasnijih i bezbednijih aktivnih molekula koji apsorbuju, reflektuju ili rasipaju UV fotone, kao i uvođenje supstanci/materijala koji mogu da spreče, neutrališu i čak poprave oštećenja kože nastala delovanjem UV zračenja. Značajan potencijal za zaštitu kože od UV zračenja prepoznat je u supstancama/sastojcima biljnog porekla, koje primarno ispoljavaju antioksidantni efekat, a dodatno, poseduju i druge fotozaštitne osobine, što ih čini interesantnim za detaljnija istraživanja. U ovom radu je dat pregled fizičkohemijskih karakteristika antioksidanasa biljnog porekla, koje su značajne za formulaciju finalnog kozmetičkog proizvoda i potencijalnih efekata ovih sirovina/materijala u zaštiti kože od UV zračenja.

Excessive exposure to the sun's radiation is the major exogenous mediator of skin damage, which accelerates skin ageing and increases the risk of developing skin cancer. Compounds with photoprotectant activity are extremely useful for decreasing the effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the skin; however, numerous sun filters, especially organic sunscreens, are allergenic. Therefore, the development of formulations containing plant extracts, which may be potentially safer, is extensively being explored. Plant-based cosmetics are commonly used to avoid skin ageing because they contain antioxidant agents that minimize free radical activity, and numerous studies have investigated the skin-protectant effects of related plant species. In addition to their antioxidant properties, plant-based cosmetics protect the skin against solar radiation because they contain polyphenols such as flavonoids and carotenoids. Therefore, this study aims to present a review of plant species commonly used in sunscreens to protect the skin against damage due to sunlight exposure.R esum e L'exposition excessive au rayonnement du soleil est le principal m ediateur exog ene de dommages a la peau, ce qui acc el ere le vieillissement de la peau et augmente le risque de d evelopper un cancer de la peau. Les compos es ayant une activit e photo-protectrice sont extrêmement utiles pour r eduire l'effet du rayonnement ultraviolet (UV) sur la peau; Toutefois, de nombreux filtres solaires, en particulier les filtres solaires organiques, sont allergisantes. Par cons equent, le d eveloppement de formulations contenant des extraits de plantes, qui peuventêtre potentiellement plus sûres, est largement explor ee. Des cosm etiques a base de plantes sont couramment utilis es pour eviter le vieillissement de la peau, car ils contiennent des agents antioxydants qui r eduisent l'activit e des radicaux libres, et de nombreuses etudes ont etudi e les effets protecteurs des esp eces de plantes apparent ees. En plus de leurs propri et es antioxydantes, les cosm etiques a base de plantes prot egent la peau contre le rayonnement solaire, car ils contiennent des polyph enols tels que les flavono€ ıdes et les carot eno€ ıdes. Par cons equent, cette etude vise a pr esenter un examen des esp eces v eg etales couramment utilis ees dans les ecrans solaires pour prot eger la peau contre les dommages dus a l'exposition au soleil.
