Total and regional bone mineral content in healthy Spanish subjects by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry

This paper shows the distribution of the body compartments, and the age and gender related changes in Spanish children. Subjects and Methods: A total of 231 healthy children from Madrid (Spain) were recruited and divided into 3 groups according to age (birth-5, 6-10, 11-15y). Body compartments (fat mass, lean mass and bone mass) measures were obtained from dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans. Total and regional body compositions were evaluated. Results: There were gender differences for TBFM (total body fat mass) in 11 - 15 year age group and for TLBM (total lean body mass) in all age groups except for the 6 - 10 year age group. TBMC (total bone mineral content) shows significant gender differences form birth. Conclusions: Contrary to boys, girls showed from early infancy a smaller proportion of muscle mass and a higher proportion of body fat (from the age of 10), with fat deposits being mostly peripheral. El objetivo de este trabajo es cuantificar, mediante Absorciometría Dual Fotónica de Rayos-X (DXA), las modificaciones de la composición corporal que la práctica de Pilates Mat produce en mujeres posmenopaúsicas de vida sedentaria. Tras un programa de ejercicios de 9 meses de duración a razón de 2 sesiones por semana de 60 minutos cada una, se observó un aumento significativo del compartimento muscular a nivel de tronco (p=0,028), abdomen (p=0,010) y brazos (p=0,042), así como una disminución significativa de la grasa de las piernas (p=0,000). La densidad mineral ósea de la columna lumbar (L2, L3 y L4) también aumentó de forma significativa. Los resultados sugieren que la práctica de Pilates Mat en mujeres posmenopaúsicas mejora su composición corporal.

Background: Idiopathic hypercalciuria (IHC), i.e. an elevated urinary calcium excretion without concomitant hypercalcemia, is a common disorder in children and can have a range of urinary clinical presentations and decreased bone mineral density (BMD). Aim: To assess the effect of IHC on bone mineral content in children without urological symptoms. Methods: Calcium excretion, BMD (by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), and anthropometry were assessed in 175 seven-year-old children who were classified as IHC or controls. Calcium intake and physical activity were measured as confounding factors. Results: The prevalence of IHC was 17.7%. Both groups (controls and IHC) showed similar baseline characteristics in terms of their anthropometry, gender distribution, and protein and calcium dietary intakes as well as physical activity scores. Urinary calciuria was independent of the calcium dietary intake and anthropometry. BMD correlated with anthropometry and physical activity but not with calcium dietary intake. IHC children had lower whole-body BMD z-scores compared to controls. The role of IHC in reducing the whole-body BMD z-score was still significant even when anthropometry, physical activity, and calcium intake were included as confounders in multivariate analyses. Conclusions: The prevalence of IHC in this population of 7-year-old children was about 17%. IHC diagnosis was associated with lower BMD z-scores and osteopenia in 22% of them.
