Torque Ripple Reduction and Flux-Droop Minimization of DTC With Improved Interleaving CSFTC of IM Fed by Three-Level NPC Inverter

Abstract: Direct torque control (DTC) is known for its fast control in AC motor drives due to its simple control structure that directly controls the torque without the need for modulation blocks or frame transformations. However, when used in induction motor (IM) drives it has three main drawbacks: large torque ripples, variable switching frequency, and sector flux-droop at the low-speed region due to the employment of the torque hysteresis controller (THC). Torque ripple minimization can be achieved in DTC drives by r… Show more

“…Depending on the operation mode, the duty cycle connecting the phases to the NP is computed. When applying COM, the phase switching between the positive and negative dc-rail has its NP connecting duty cycle zero, while the rest of the phases switch in two consecutive voltage levels and their NP duty cycles are calculated using (2). When applying NOM, all the phases switch in two consecutive voltage levels.…”

“…Moreover, the neutral point (NP) accessibility allows independent control of the split dc-link capacitors. As a result, the NPC converter has been extensively utilized in various applications including medium voltage drives [2]- [5], grid integration of renewable energy sources like solar [6]- [10] and wind [11]- [15], static reactive power compensators [16]- [19], etc.…”

“…Illustrated in Figure 6(a) is the conventional DTC where the proportional integral (PI) controller regulated the torque error before comparing with the two compliment phases of triangular waveforms which contain the carrier frequencies. This approach was prolonged into MLI as in [3], [57], [58]. As employed in CHB-DTC [57], the constant frequency controller was added with six comparators and six triangular waveforms as shown in Figure 6…”

“…Direct torque-controlled drives were introduced more than 10 years later than vector-controlled drives [2]. The advantage of the DTC methods is their simple control structures that directly control the torque without many frame transformations [3], and therefore, they are simple to simulate on computers and easy to implement on practical control systems. DTC strategy brings desired electromagnetic torque control and robustness for controlled systems [2].…”
