Toroidal plasma produced by the stabilized double-theta pinch

Abstract: The properties of the toroidal plasma produced by the stabilized double-theta pinch are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The toroidal plasma produced has a strongly elongated crosssection with the half-axis ratio b/a ~ 14 and an aspect ratio R 0 /a ~ 8 at t = 3 /is, when the values of ]3 and /3 are approximately 0.23 and 0.30, respectively. It is shown that in the vicinity of the median plane of the plasma the Suydam criterion S > 0 for the high m-mode is satisfied throughout the cross-section of… Show more

“…Another concept utilizes two coaxial cylindrical magnetic field coils with parallel currents which induce a plasma current within the annulus between them [11]. Such plasmas have been generated experimentally, although on dynamic time-scales [12,13 ]. In this paper, we calculate the time evolution of a quasi-static Ohmically heated FRC, independent of the specific formation technique, provided it is capable of increasing the internal poloidal magnetic flux of the FRC; similar analyses applied to the RMF current drive technique have been reported [14,15].…”

“…The Double Theta-Pinch experiments were conducted in Japan from 1974-1978 [13], [51], [42], [52]. The experiment was developed to create a high β toroidal plasma stabilized by a toroidal magnetic field.…”

“…The lifetime was extended by a couple µs by reducing the decay of the coil currents with power crowbarring. The final Double Theta-Pinch experiment [52] measured the internal magnetic field structure of the plasmoid. The magnetic field measurements were used to estimate the plasma equilibria properties, including internal plasma pressure, toroidal and poloidal currents, and the plasma β .…”
