Topological applications of Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes

Abstract: Methods of commutative and homological algebra yield information on the Stanley-Reisner ring k[K] of a simplicial complex K. Consider the following problem: describe topological properties of simplicial complexes with given properties of the ring k[K]. It is known that for a simplicial complex K = ∂P * , where P * is a polytope dual to the simple polytope P of dimension n, the depth of depth k[K] equals n. A recent construction allows us to associate a simplicial complex K P to any convex polytope P. As a cons… Show more

“…cdim Z K J for flag K. In fact, this identity holds for any simplicial complex. It can be obtained by applying the combinatorial Alexander duality (see [BP,Corollary 2.4.6]) to the results of Aizenberg [Ai,Proposition 3.2]. He proved that the s-link-acyclic simplicial complexes are exactly s-subcomplexacyclic complexes.…”

“…The alternative "a simplicial complex is contractible or homotopy equivalent to a sphere" can be decided by computing its simplicial homology. Proposition 4.3 was further used in [4] to show that the depth of the Stanley-Reisner algebra krK P s (i.e. the maximal length of regular sequences in this algebra) coincides with dim P .…”
