This study investigated the mechanism and efficacy of topical acidified aliphatic ester for treatment of axillary osmidrosis (AO). A total of 32 AO patients were enrolled in this study. In the initial pilot study, 20 patients were double-blindly, randomly divided into acidified aliphatic ester or aliphatic ester treatment groups, followed by efficacy evaluation after 4 weeks. Then, all patients (n = 32) were treated with topical acidified aliphatic ester for 16 weeks. Efficacy was evaluated at every 4 weeks, and at 3-and 6-month follow-ups. Changes of pH values and microecology at targeting sites were analyzed. In the first cohort (n = 20) of pilot study, acidified aliphatic ester showed significantly higher curative rate (60% vs 10%, P < .05) and effective rate (90% vs 30%; P < .05) than aliphatic ester. For the next 16 weeks, 25 of 32 cases completed treatment. Curative rate showed gradual and significant increases from 64% to 96% during the treatment courses (P = .001); it slightly but insignificantly decreased at 3-and 6-month follow-ups. Abundance of Corynebacterium and Anaerobic bacteria decreased while Staphylococcus increased after treatments. Axillary pH values negatively correlated with Staphylococcus abundance (r = −.40, P = .01) and positively with Corynebacterium abundance (r = .64, P = .01). We concluded that topical acidified aliphatic ester could effectively alleviate conditions of AO patients by reducing value of axillary pH and rebalancing axillary microecology.

A crescente incidência de infecções bacterianas em lesões crônicas de pele é um problema mundial. Pesquisas sobre métodos terapêuticos alternativos, como utilização de óleos vegetais ozonizados, tornaram-se promissoras. Dessa forma, objetivou-se evidenciar a ação antimicrobiana de óleos vegetais ozonizados frente a estirpes bacterianas. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa realizada através de buscas nas seguintes bases de dados e bibliotecas: Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde, Sistema Online de Busca e Análise de Literatura, Biblioteca Nacional de Medicina dos Estados Unidos, Biblioteca Eletrônica Científica Online e dois bancos de dados da Elsevier (Science Direct e Scopus). Foram selecionados 11 artigos, 73% desses trabalhos foram publicados nos últimos 5 anos, enquanto apenas 27% foram publicados nos anos de 2011 e 2013. Houveram publicações da China, Itália, Brasil, Cuba, França e Turquia. Todos os trabalhos utilizaram métodos laboratoriais para avaliar o potencial antimicrobiano do óleo vegetal ozonizado. O efeito antibacteriano dos óleos relacionou-se às condições de ozonização que foram submetidos e sua composição final de peróxidos e ácidos carboxílicos. Verificou-se que esses compostos promoveram alterações celulares e impediram crescimento bacteriano, podendo induzir morte bacteriana. Através dessa revisão foi possível apresentar informações atualizadas sobre uma alternativa terapêutica promissora contra infecções bacterianas na pele.

Human skin, our most environmentally exposed organ, is colonized by a vast array of microorganisms constituting its microbiome. These bacterial communities are crucial for the fulfillment of human physiological functions such as immune system modulation and epidermal development and differentiation. The structure of the human skin microbiome is established during the early life stages, starting even before birth, and continues to be modulated throughout the entire life cycle, by multiple host-related and environmental factors. This review focuses on extrinsic factors, ranging from cosmetics to the environment and antibacterial agents, as forces that impact the human skin microbiome and well-being. Assessing the impact of these factors on the skin microbiome will help elucidate the forces that shape the microbial populations we coexist with. Furthermore, we will gain additional insight into their tendency to stimulate a healthy environment or to increase the propensity for skin disorder development.
