Topical Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) Extract Does Not Accelerate the Oral Wound Healing in Rats

Abstract: The effect of topical application of Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) extract was assessed on the healing of rat oral wounds in an in vivo model using 72 male Wistar rats divided into three groups (n = 24): control, placebo and Aloe Vera (0.5% extract hydroalcoholic). “…Several studies have investigated the development of an ideal healing agent, although there is still no widely accepted or gold standard treatment for the management of oral ulcers. Different strategies are often combined and involve the use of corticosteroids (Oliveira et al, ), antibiotics (Teixeira et al, ), laser therapy (Wagner et al, ), and natural compound formulations (Coelho et al, ; Lim et al, ). However, these alternatives may not have significant benefits or can even lead to unwanted side effects (Coelho et al, ; Oliveira et al, ).…”

“…Aloe vera ( A. vera ) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Liliaceae family, distributed widely in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the southern parts of North America. It is popularly used in functional foods and nutraceuticals (Coelho, et al, ; Sun, et al, ). In A. vera , the chromones show perfect radical scavenging and anti‐inflammatory properties (Choodej, Sommit, & Pudhom, ; Lucini, Pellizzoni, Pellegrino, Molinaria, & Colla, ), and the anthraquinone derivatives show effective antioxidant and anticancer properties (Huang, et al, ; Lo, Nian, Chiu, Wang, & Wu, ; Nemmar, Al‐Salam, Yuvaraju, Beegam, & Ali, ).…”
