Top‐down lignomic matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight tandem mass spectrometry analysis of lignin oligomers extracted from date palm wood

Abstract: Rationale We report for the first time the top‐down lignomic analysis of the virgin released lignin (VRL) oligomers obtained from the Saudi date palm wood (SDPW), using a matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight/time‐of‐flight (MALDI‐TOF/TOF) instrument. In addition, we are proposing new collision‐induced dissociation tandem mass spectrometry (CID‐MS/MS) fragmentation routes for this series of unreported VRL oligomers. Methods We have used direct MALDI‐TOF‐MS analysis of the mixture of lignin… Show more

“…71 The distribution of these bonds in a lignin molecule is a key characteristic and significantly contributes to the observed chemistry. The presence of these weak and strong bonds opens the door to a description of lignin structure by clusters oligomeric units with ether and/or ester covalent links 87 that could be used to describe lignin thermal behavior. The widely accepted polymerization process for lignin construction involves oxidative radicalization of phenols, followed by combinatorial radical coupling.…”

“…An estimated list including in total 172 lignin‐related phenolic compounds was prepared based on previous reports (Table S81) . The estimated list included 43 monomers, 58 dimers, 40 trimers, 16 tetramers, 6 pentamers, and 7 hexamers, alongside their exact mass, chemical formula, RDB, type of lignin‐related phenolic compound, a compound label, a literature reference for all Los, and the name of the included LMs.…”

“…Recently, the group performed a top-down sequencing of LOs extracted from date palm wood via MALDI-TOF analysis (Albishi et al, 2019). They identified six novel VRL oligomer molecules, describing their structure in detail via never-before-reported CID-MS/MS fragmentations.…”
