Abstract

Varley loop determinations are subject to inaccuracy where the insulation resistance of the good wire is not considerably greater than that of the faulty wire. Two factors contribute to the error, one of which can be allowed for in Behrend's test or in the double Varley loop. An extension of Behrend's method is described which will correct for both factors.S u S 2 and S 3 and the corresponding bridge balancing resistances are R { R 2 and /? 3 , then 2(L -X) = S 2 y (2) where a *= R 3 (Ri -R 2 ), j8 = Ri(R 2 -R 3 ) and y = R 2 (R 3 -/?,)Normally one of the far-end closing resistances, say 5* 3 , will be chosen to be zero, and a simplification may be effected by setting Si = S and S 2 = IS.
