Tool geometry based prediction of critical thrust force while drilling carbon fiber reinforced polymers

Abstract: Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) are known to be difficult to cut due to the abrasive nature of carbon fibers and the low thermal conductivity of the polymer matrix. Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) drills are commonly employed in CFRP drilling to satisfy hole quality conditions with an acceptable tool life. Drill geometry is known to be influential on the hole quality and productivity of the process. Considering the variety of CFRP laminates and available PCD drills on the market, selecting the suitable … Show more

“…Similar pattern was observed by others with PCD drills, coated and uncoated carbide drills. 27,[30][31][32] As was observed for delamination, here too, coated tools resulted into much less fraying damage in comparison to baseline HSS as can be seen in Figures 7 and 9.…”

“…On the other hand, high temperature and chip formation like powder during drilling cause deterioration in surface integrity of isotropic and heterogenic CFRP layers [15]. This situation is a result of having different mechanical and thermal properties of matrix and reinforcement materials which form composite materials, causing a more difficult drilling process than traditional metal cutting processes [16].…”

“…Hole quality in drilling of CFRP depends on various factors such as tool edge geometry, tool coatings, cutting force, feed rate and cutting environment [17][18][19][20][21]. Similarly, 50% increase in tool life was observed with coating on the cutting tool during drilling [22].…”
