Tomato Breeding for Sustainable Crop Systems: High Levels of Zingiberene Providing Resistance to Multiple Arthropods

Abstract: In sustainable cropping systems, the management of herbivorous arthropods is a challenge for the high performance of the tomato crop. One way to reduce the damage caused by these pests is the use of resistant cultivars within a sustainable integrated management system. The host selection of Tetranychus urticae, Bemisia tabaci, and Tuta absoluta was evaluated, characterizing their preference among the tomato genotypes RVTZ2011-79-503-143, RVTZ2011-79-335-164, RVTZ2011-79-185-250 (high zingiberene content—HZC), … Show more

“…Glandular trichomes may also contain defensive substances that constitute a firstline chemical barrier against infesting arthropods. The sesquiterpenes Zingiberene, present in some tomato glandular trichomes, was associated with TSSM nymph mortality and diminishing fecundity (Oliveira et al, 2018;Oliveira et al, 2020). The strong correlation observed between the density of non-glandular trichomes and the oviposition and survival of adults are presumably related to the dysfunction caused by these structures to the movement and permanence of the mite on the surface of the leaflet (Resende et al, 2020).…”

“…Zingiberene has been shown to confer resistance to insect pests upon tomatoes (ccc). Genotypes with high zingiberene content demonstrated lower appeal for T. absoluta egg deposition (de Oliveira et al, 2020). In addition, genotypes exhibiting high contents in both zingiberene and acyl sugars, showed greater resistance than genotypes accumulating only one of these chemicals, indicating a synergistic effect between zingiberene and acyl sugars (Maluf et al, 2010).…”

“…In addition, genotypes exhibiting high contents in both zingiberene and acyl sugars, showed greater resistance than genotypes accumulating only one of these chemicals, indicating a synergistic effect between zingiberene and acyl sugars (Maluf et al, 2010). Zingiberene content has high heritability, (<80%), its production being controlled by two genes with incomplete dominance (de Oliveira et al, 2020).…”

“…The development of resistant cultivars is critical for a transition to a sustainable system. The host selection of Tetranychus urticae, Bemisia tabaci, and Tuta absoluta was evaluated by de Oliveira et al [5], characterizing their preference for high zingiberene content (HZC) or low zingiberene content (LZC) tomato leaves. Tomato genotypes with HZC showed repellency to pests and induced a nonpreference for oviposition.…”
