Show more

“…This fact explains the wide range of results obtained in several studies. Cavero et al (2004) have exposed young Arapaima gigas to a concentration of 25 mg/L NH 3 + NH 4 + or 2 mg/L NH 3 for 24 hours and no effect was observed on fish survival or performance. The toxicity of nitrite to fish has received much attention in recent years, but little information is available on the susceptibility of tropical fish to this compound (Moraes et al, 1998;Martinez & Souza, 2002;Costa et al, 2004).…”

“…Ammonia is the main product excreted by fish (Bolner et al, 2014), including R. quelen (Golombieski et al, 2013), and at high concentration compromises the metabolism, alters growth, and can lead to death (Cavero et al, 2004). Recently, Pottinger (2017) raised an issue that possibly ammonia, nitrate and nitrite influence the function of the stress axis in fish, alone or in combination.…”

“…This control should be even more stringent when determining the tolerance of a given species to a stressor agent, in order to assure reliable results, which dictate the animal tolerance limits (Lima 2003;Avilez et al 2004;Cavero et al 2004). For example, studies involving Piaractus mesopotamicus indicate that water temperature seems to have an influence on the mortality rates caused by A. hydrophila and septicemia outbreaks are associated with high water temperatures (Garcia et al 2009).…”
