“…In fact, demonstrated that N-facing transplants of air-dry thalli of X. parietina to whom parietin was removed remained vital and healthy, while S-facing transplants partly died or bleached. Dzubaj et al (2008) found a content of chlorophyll and carotenoids in X. parietina thalli similar to ours, and a correlation between the ratio carotenoids/chlorophyll and the amount of parietin, indicating that parietin synthesis may also affect the chlorophyll content.…”

“…Healthy lichens have F v /F m in the range 0.6 -0.7 (Dzubaj et al 2008) and lower values indicate damage to PS 2 and hence a decreased photosynthetic efficiency. This parameter is used routinely to establish the physiological status of thalli in experimental and environmental lichenology (Garty 2001).…”

“…Authentic samples of cortical lichen substances were used when available: atranorin (Sigma; the compound was a mixture of atranorin and chloroatranorin), (+) usnic acid (Aldrich). Crystals of parietin isolated previously from the lichen Xanthoria parietina (purity approximately 98%; Dzubaj et al 2008) were also used as a standard. Based on the amount of lichen secondary metabolites in the intact slice of lichen thalli and the amount of lichen biomass consumed by larvae, we calculated the proportion of ingested secondary metabolites found in larval biomass and in faeces.…”
