TOD versus MRT when evaluating thermal imagers that exhibit dynamic performance

Abstract: While it is universally recognized that image quality of a thermal sensor is a strong function of spatial uniformity, the metrics commonly used to assess performance do not adequately measure the effectiveness of non-uniformity correction (NUC). Image uniformity is generally not static, particularly if correction terms are updated intermittently (with periodic shuttering) or gradually (with scene-based NUC). Minimum Resolvable Temperature (MRT), the most prevalent test for characterizing overall imaging perfor… Show more

“…The correct response probability is determined by the statistical method for each contrast value of the test pattern and its background clutter, and the threshold contrast corresponding to 75% probability are obtained by the Weibull function [4] for a number of triangle sizes (e.g. [5][6][7][8]. Finally, the threshold contrast is plotted as a function of the angular size or angle spatial frequency of the triangle pattern, which can describe the sensor system performance.…”

“…As an alternative method, the Triangle Orientation Discrimination (TOD) threshold was proposed by the Human Factors Research Institute in the Netherlands [2][3][4][5][6]. Much industry literature shows that the TOD has a number of notional advantages over MRTD.…”

“…(3) the research on MRT and its modification [7,8] (4)the research on new target acquisition performance characterization model and new performance measurement method [9] . As the research of the model involves too many problems, through the analysis of classical model and noticeable model, the thesis makes a survey on the issues and limiting factors for building such model, while setting forth the process of the improvement of the model.…”
