Improving soil physical properties is important to soil conservation. Cover cropping can improve soil physical properties and organic matter content which can reduce soil loss, and thereby improve land productivity and environmental quality. In this article, the benefits of cover crops (CCs) for improving soil physical and hydraulic properties are reviewed as well as some soil conservation benefits that might accrue. The review indicates that CCs reduce soil bulk density by approximately 4%, increase macropores by approximately 33%, and increase water infiltration by as much as 629%, as compared to soil with no CCs. These improvements have been reported to lead to as much as 96% reduction in soil loss. Some current knowledge gaps in understanding how CCs can improve soil physical properties have been identified, including identifying which biomass, aboveground or belowground biomass, plays a greater role in organic C accumulation. Future research should focus on the interconnectedness of soil pores generated by CCs and the influence of CCs on heat transport parameters to further improve soil physical properties and associated benefits.

A indústria de tabaco vem ganhando destaque com o passar dos anos, no entanto, suas consequências para a saúde continuam sendo uma preocupação constante. Considerando o destaque dessas indústrias, os sistemas de gestão são imprescindíveis para minimizar impactos neste e em outros setores, considerando os aspectos relacionados a sustentabilidade de um processo. Devido às consequências que podem trazer ao meio ambiente, este trabalho visa efetuar um estudo de caso de uma propriedade produtora de tabaco a fim de determinar impactos ambientais usando uma matriz de interação. A Matriz de Leopold foi o modelo utilizado para avaliar os efeitos bióticos e antrópicos em comparação aos aspectos ambientas. Os resultados encontrados demostraram os pontos mais críticos, importantes, frequentes e significativos de cada etapa do processo de produção agrícola de tabaco e que são de extrema importância ambiental, pois causam impactos negativos no ar, solo e água. Com a avaliação realizada identificou-se que os impactos positivos (43,8%) estão relacionados as atividades antrópicas e os negativos (56,3%) estão relacionados principalmente ao meio físico.

Metabolic Profiling of Resistant and Susceptible Tobaccos Response Incited by Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum Causing Bacterial Wilt

The causal agent of bacterial wilt, Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum, can cause significant economic losses during tobacco production. Metabolic analyses are a useful tool for the comprehensive identification of plant defense response metabolites. In this study, a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) approach was used to identify metabolites differences in tobacco xylem sap in response to R. pseudosolanacearum CQPS-1 in two tobacco cultivars: Yunyan87 (susceptible to R. pseudosolanacearum) and K326 (quantitatively resistant). Metabolite profiling 7 days post inoculation with R. pseudosolanacearum identified 88 known compounds, 42 of them enriched and 6 depleted in the susceptible cultivar Yunyan87, while almost no changes occurred in quantitatively resistant cultivar K326. Putrescine was the most enriched compound (12-fold) in infected susceptible tobacco xylem, followed by methyl-alpha-d-glucopyranoside (9-fold) and arabinitol (6-fold). Other sugars, amino acids, and organic acids were also enriched upon infection. Collectively, these metabolites can promote R. pseudosolanacearum growth, as shown by the increased growth of bacterial cultures supplemented with xylem sap from infected tobacco plants. Comparison with previous metabolic data showed that beta-alanine, phenylalanine, and leucine were enriched during bacterial wilt in both tobacco and tomato xylem.
