To which world regions does the valence–dominance model of social perception apply?

Abstract: Over the last ten years, Oosterhof and Todorov's valence-dominance model has emerged as the most prominent account of how people evaluate faces on social dimensions. In this model, two dimensions (valence and dominance) underpin social judgments of faces. Because this model has primarily been developed and tested in Western regions, it is unclear whether these findings apply to other regions. We addressed this question by replicating Oosterhof and Todorov's methodology across 11 world regions, 41 countries, an… Show more

“…Although it could be argued that such replications are rhetorically useful—many researchers may even agree that the original work was questionable (Dreber et al, 2015)—it is hard to see how such a “whack-a-mole” approach can lead to a productive science. (Fortunately, more constructive approaches have arisen, such as the Psychological Science Accelerator [e.g., Jones et al, 2021], modeled after high-energy physics. )…”

“…In the olfactory research community, the Global Consortium for Chemosensory Research (www.gcchemosensr.org) studies olfactory-related changes in COVID-19 infection (Parma et al, 2020). The first publication from the Psychological Science Accelerator, another large-scale research collaboration, assessed how faces are evaluated in different world regions (Jones et al, 2021). Such efforts might be used as templates for conducting large-scale replication efforts.…”

“…For example, Chinese people believe that a smiling face signals emotional instability, while Americans do not ( Walker et al, 2011 ). Third, although the “approachability” dimension displays cross-cultural consistency ( Sutherland et al, 2018 ; Wu et al, 2020 ; Jones et al, 2021 ), contradictory perspectives exist regarding how the meaning of trustworthiness and warmth in the “approachability” dimension is interpreted. In the context of Western culture, some researchers believed that the meanings of these two traits are similar ( Fiske et al, 2007 ; Wang et al, 2019 ), while others supported the “morality differentiation hypothesis” ( Goodwin et al, 2014 ; Landy et al, 2016 ).…”
