To freeze or not to freeze: decision regret and satisfaction following elective oocyte cryopreservation

Abstract: The risk of decision regret following EOC is non-negligible. Low number of mature oocytes cryopreserved is a risk factor for increased regret, while perceptions of adequate information and emotional support, and increased patient-estimates of achieving a live birth using banked eggs are associated with reduced risk of regret.

“…The first study to assess regret following SEF identified no regret in a series of 65 women . However, a more recent and detailed study in >200 women used the validated decision regret scale, and demonstrated 49% had mild‐to‐moderate regret following SEF, acknowledging that regret was more likely if low numbers of oocytes were stored . This was not observed in our population, where the mean total number of oocytes stored in those who experienced regret was slightly higher than in those who did not experience regret, albeit not to a significant extent (10.9 vs 10.0 P = 0.68).…”

“…Even after thorough information, however, many women state that freezing is better that doing nothing, and that they would regret it if not (35,36). The women in the study by Gold et al (35) also stated that they would have frozen earlier if they had been aware of the possibility.…”
