“To Cherish Each Day as it Comes”: a qualitative study of spirituality among persons receiving palliative care

Abstract: Spirituality was experienced broadly as an important dimension of how participants lived with terminal illness. Religious and non-religious characteristics were recognised which reveals the complex nature of the phenomenon. Faith was a significant part of the participants' spirituality indicating the importance of attending to this aspect of palliative care. The study suggests the potential contributions of theological approaches which are relevant for palliative care research and practice.

“…In a study conducted by Asgeirsdottir et al (2013) [3] the patients at end of life care experienced characteristics of existential and spiritual distress and the majority expressed how their situation influenced their loved ones, being aware of the impact of the illness on the family members even to the extent that they were considered to suffer more than they themselves, picturing the family as a non-religious spiritual resource in the caring process which draws attention to the importance of attending to the spiritual needs of the family as a whole.…”
