Tissue factor expression in breast cancer tissues: its correlation with prognosis and plasma concentration

Abstract: Tissue factor (TF), an initiator of the extrinsic coagulation cascade, is expressed in a wide range of cancer cells and plays important roles in cancer progression and metastasis. Recently, the intracellular function of TF has been revealed to be involved in cancer invasion, independent of the blood coagulation pathway. To evaluate the clinical significance of TF expression, we performed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in the plasma of 67 breast cancer patients and immunohistochemistry in 213 brea… Show more

“…Previous work has demonstrated a hypercoagulable state in breast cancer patients, with elevated markers of coagulation, including thrombin -antithrombin (TAT) (Falanga et al, 1998;Ozyilkan et al, 1998), fibrinogen (Miller and Heilmann, 1988), D-dimer (Blackwell et al, 2000;Oberhoff et al, 2000) and tissue factor (TF) (Lwaleed et al, 1999;Ueno et al, 2000).…”

“…The incubation of MDA-MB231 cancer cells with monocytes also induced an increase in cell-associated TF expression in both monocytes and MDA-MB231 cancer cells. TF, an initiator of blood coagulation cascade, is expressed in a wide variety of cancer cells and it is an independent prognostic indicator for overall survival in cancer patients (Ueno et al, 2000a). This increase in TF, because of cooperation between cancer cells and monocytes, could contribute to the deleterious effect of monocytes in cancer progression, as it plays an important role in cancer cell invasiveness.…”

“…Attention has been focused on tissue factor (TF), a transmembrane receptor protein, which is not only the primary initiator of coagulation but also promotes tumor growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis [10][11][12]. Many tumor cells express high levels of TF and in several types of cancer, including breast cancer and pancreatic cancer, TF expression on tumor cells correlated with grade and tumor progression [13][14][15]. Only Kakkar et al [16] reported on the presence of circulating TF antigen in cancer patients, although the significance of this finding has not been clarified.…”
