TiO2-Nanofillers Effects on Some Properties of Highly- Impact Resin Using Different Processing Techniques

Abstract: Background:The criteria of conventional curing of polymethyl methacrylate do not match the standard properties of the denture base materials. Objectives:This research was conducted to investigate the addition of TiO2 nano practical on impact strength, thermal conductivity and color stability of acrylic resin cured by microwave in comparison to the conventional cured of heat-polymerized acrylic resin.Materials and Methods:120 specimens made of high impact acrylic resin were divided into two main groups according… Show more

“…The microwave-cured specimens were deflasked after overnight bench cooling. 2,14 Excess resin material was carefully trimmed with a tungsten carbide bur (HM251FX-040-HP; Meisinger, Centennial, CO, USA). Specimens were finished and polished according to manufacturer's instructions under running water to minimize heat generation and avoid distortion of specimens.…”

“…As they have many advantages such as, simple laboratory procedures, easy to repair, good fit, sufficient stability in oral condition, accurate reproduction of tissue details, lightness in weight, low cost, lack of toxicity, and patient satisfaction in relation to color matching and good aesthetic. [1][2][3] Unfortunately, these resins have inadequate mechanical properties which may lead to premature fracture of the dentures during service. After few years of PMMA denture use, it may deteriorate under normal masticatory forces due to fatigue, continuous flexing, sudden fall, or uneven stresses associated with malocclusion or poor fit.…”

“…Its photocatalytic ability promoted it to be known as an antimicrobial agent encouraging its addition to biomaterials [11, 12, 20, 23, 25]. TiO 2 NP have been found effective against a wide range of microorganisms including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and viruses [11, 23, 25]. The antimicrobial effect could be attributed to the surface properties and structure of the nanoparticles, including; nanocrystalline TiO 2 , hydrophilic surface effect, infrared reflectivity, and noncontact antimicrobial activity.…”

“…The monomer containing NP was sonicated for 60 min before mixing with PMMA powder [32]. Others were sonicated using a probe at 120 W and 60 KHz for 3 min to prevent nanoparticles agglomeration and insure homogeneity of the mixture [18, 25].…”

“…The nature of the incorporated nanoparticles, their size, and morphology play an important role in determining the properties of new materials [5]. Various types of nanomaterials such as zirconium oxide [3,8], carbon nanotube [9], aluminium dioxide [10], silver [11], zinc oxide [12] and widely used titanium dioxide [13][14][15][16] were used to increase the mechanical properties of Acrylic Denture Base Resin (ADBR). Titanium dioxide (TiO2) acts as a coloring agent and it can bring additional benefits to ADBR such as antimicrobial properties [17].…”
