TiO2‐Oligoaldaramide nanocomposites as efficient core‐shell systems for wood preservation

Abstract: Homogeneous core-shell systems were obtained with a growth, in controlled steps, of several oligoamides on TiO 2 nanoparticles. Derivatives of natural compounds, such as L-tartaric acid and a,a 0 -trehalose, were used as diesters in the polycondensation reactions with ethylenediamine. TiO 2 anatase was chosen because of its high photo-activity and its antimicrobial activity. The TiO 2 nanoparticles had been previously activated then functionalized using two different coupling agents, and finally, the TiO 2 -ol… Show more

“…A new band at 614–624 cm −1 located in the broad region from 480 to 700 cm −1 is the specific peak for TiO 2 in the FTIR spectra for TiO 2 @PAPDA‐II to TiO 2 @PAPDA‐VI core–shell nanocomposites. A similar value of the TiO 2 band was recently reported . This proves the incorporation of TiO 2 nanoparticles into the PAPDA‐I backbone.…”

“…Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) is another nanoparticle that has a good potential to be used as wood preservative. The potential of TiO 2 is related to its antibacterial and antifungal [ 14 , 225 ] and UV-resistant properties [ 225 , 226 ]. However, the study on wood treated with TiO 2 is still under preliminary investigation [ 14 , 225 ].…”

“…In applications for wood protection, many positive effects have been observed: the cellular microstructures of wood are easily and well coated by the nano-particles [93]; good anchoring takes place through interaction of TiO 2 particles with hemicellulose and lignin [94]; pronounced hydrophobicity [93,94] and reduction of fungi growth [95,96] are found. However, TiO 2 for UV protection of wood difficult work effectively if used alone or if the applied coating does not achieve a suitable thickness [97,98].…”
