Novel Attribute of Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Coatings for Protection and Preservation of Materials (Stone and Wood) Belonging to Cultural Heritage

Abstract: In order to protect a material belonging to Cultural Heritage (i.e., stone, wood) from weathering, and in turn to preserve its beauty and historical value for the future generations, the contact with external harmful agents, particularly water, must be avoided, or at least limited. This task can be successfully obtained with the use of a protective organic coating. The use of nano-metric reinforcing agents in conventional polymeric coatings demonstrated to be a successful route in achieving better protective p… Show more

“…Thus, the protection of stone-built cultural heritage has attracted the attention of researchers in various fields. Stone-built cultural heritage exposed to weather conditions can be damaged by acid rain corrosion [1][2][3][4], industrial pollution [5,6], microbial erosion [7,8], and soluble salt crystallization [9]. Coating stone is an effective way to protect stone-built cultural relics from damage [10].…”

“…According to relevant studies [15][16][17][18][19][20], the chemical synthesis processes of the two kinds of coatings are shown in Figure 1. As seen in Figure 1a, first, the addition action occurred in the C=C bonds of the AA, ST, and EA in the case of initiator.…”

“…In general, the coating performance of bamboo scrimber was poorer than that of bamboo, either coated with PUA or epoxy resin. The epoxy resin had a better coating performance than PUA.Coatings 2019, 9, 161 2 of 12 role in coatings [20]. However, few studies focus on the coating techniques and processes of waterborne coating materials.…”

“…Conservation strategies to reduce the degradation of stone caused by the action of water are being continuously developed. In this sense, new products and procedures have been recently designed to reduce the wetting ability of stone [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. In the case of marble, research has been focused on the development of protective coatings [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16].…”
