Time trends in the burden of stroke and subtypes attributable to PM2.5 in China from 1990 to 2019

Abstract: BackgroundIncreasing studies have found that PM2.5 has large adverse effects on stroke mortality. We want to investigate the long-term trends in the mortality of stroke attributable to ambient particulate matter pollution and household air pollution to provide evidence facilitating the design of policy.MethodsThe deaths data of stroke and its subtypes attributable to PM2.5 were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019, analyzed by Joinpoint regression software and the age-period-cohort (APC) metho… Show more

“…IS is defined as vascular events that restrict blood flow to brain tissues and result in infarction, thrombotic or embolic stroke, or atherosclerotic stroke (excluding intracerebral hemorrhage) [3, 19]. The International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition (ICD-10), identifies IS as follows: IS (G45–G46.8, I63–I63.9, I65–I66.9, I67.2–I67.848, I69.3–I69.4) [20]. In this study, we selected the top 11 risk factors for IS in China from the GBD 2019 database and downloaded corresponding ASMR for IS, as well as data on the number of deaths and mortality rates for male and female IS cases in various age groups from the Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx) online query tool (https://vizhub.healthdata.org/gbd-results/).…”

“…For segmented line regression, the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) was used to calculate the optimal number of change points. The software uses a Z -test to check whether the slope for each trend segment is significantly different from prior segment ( 18 ).…”

“…We applied the Intrinsic Estimator (IE) in the analysis process ( 27 ). The APC model’s formula was expressed as follows: Y = log (M) = μ + αX1 + βX2 + γX3 + ε, with X1, X2, and X3 representing age, period, and birth cohort groups, respectively; M representing disease incidence or mortality; α, β, and γ denoting the estimated age, period, and birth cohort effect values, respectively; μ representing the intercept; and ε representing random error following a normal distribution ( 28–30 ).…”
