Time Course Effect of Thyroxine on Serum Lipoprotein Concentrations in Hypothyroid Subjects

Abstract: In order to analyse the time course effect of thyroxine replacement therapy on lipoprotein concentrations, 12 hypothyroid subjects were studied before and repeatedly during therapy. The substitution dose was increased gradually every fourth week until the plasma level of TSH became normal. The concentrations of cholesterol and triglycerides were anlysed in whole serum and in the three major lipoprotein fractions VLDL, LDL and HDL. The main abnormality before treatment was an increased LDL cholesterol concentra… Show more

“…[ 25 ] indicated that hypothyroid patients, who had received levothyroxine therapy, showed decreased levels of LDL-C, and total cholesterol as far as thyroid hormones reached normal levels. Hylander and Rosenqvist[ 26 ] also reported that levothyroxine therapy in hypothyroid patients with abnormal LDL could improve the LDL cholesterol level until TSH reached a normal level. The above results confirm the findings of the present study.…”
