TIGER: A front-end ASIC for timing and energy measurements with radiation detectors

Abstract: A mixed-signal ASIC for timing and energy measurements with radiation detectors is presented. The chip embeds 64 channels, each of which features a charge-sensitive amplifier followed by a dual-shaper coupled to low-offset discriminators. A versatile back-end, incorporating low-power Time to Digital Converters and Wilkinson Analog to Digital Converters with derandomizing buffers allows to encode both the time of arrival and the charge of the input signal. The ASIC is designed for a maximum detector capacitance… Show more

“…To achieve the spatial resolution, time resolution and rate requirements of the upgrade, a full readout chain has also been developed alongside the detector [6]. The on-detector electronics are developed by the INFN section of Turin and revolve around a new Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC), specifically designed for the readout of GEM detectors, called TIGER (Torino Integrated GEM Electronics for Readout) [7]. This new chip is capable of performing simultaneous charge and time measurements on input signals up to 50 fC for input capacitances up to 100 pF.…”

“…For such reason, the whole readout chain was designed keeping in mind strong adaptability and modularity. 3 Front-end electronics: TIGER ASIC TIGER (Torino Integrated GEM Electronics for Readout) is the ASIC designed for the readout of the CGEM-IT strips [11]. Each mixed-signal chip can handle the complete readout of the data incoming from 64 channels, providing time and charge measurement in order to satisfy all the design requirements (table 3) .…”

“…A signal of about 100 fC per m.i.p. is collected on the strips and the TIGER (Torino Integrated Gem Electronics for Readout) electronics [6] is used to measure the time and the collected charge. Two ASICs are installed on a Front-End Board (FEB) to read the signal from 128 strips.…”
